 01  What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

​

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. Here are some statistics about autism:

  1. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 54 children in the United States has been identified with ASD.

  2. Autism is more commonly diagnosed in boys than in girls, with a ratio of about 4:1.

  3. Autism can be diagnosed as early as age 2, but most children are not diagnosed until age 4 or later.

  4. There is no known single cause of autism, but researchers believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may play a role in its development.

  5. People with autism have a wide range of abilities and challenges. Some may have exceptional skills in areas like music, math, or art, while others may struggle with communication, sensory processing, or social interaction.

  6. There is no cure for autism, but early intervention and therapy can help children with ASD develop important skills and improve their quality of life.

  7. Despite the challenges that come with autism, many people with ASD are able to lead fulfilling and independent lives with the right support and resources.

 

 

 

 02  What is the Autism Waiver Program?

The Autism Waiver Program is a government-funded program in MD that provides additional services and support to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. The program typically offers a range of services, including family consultation, respite care, intensive individual support services (IISS), and other specialized therapies and supports, which may not be covered under traditional Medicaid or other insurance programs. To qualify for the program, children must meet certain eligibility criteria, and families may need to complete an application process to enroll.  03  Who should apply for Autism Waiver services?

Maryland children with autism, ages 2 through 21, who need an Intermediate Care Facility for the Intellectually Disabled (ICF-ID) level of care.

 

 

 

 04  How should I apply for Autism Waiver services?

​

Apply for future services by contacting the Waiver Services Registry at 1-866-417-3480. The Waiver Services Registry is a list of individuals interested in waiver services. For more information regarding the Autism Waiver, contact the Maryland State Department of Education at 410-767-1446.

 

 

 

 05  What is the eligibility criteria?

​

Medical and Technical Criteria: 1)Individuals must be certified as needing services from an ICF-ID. 2) Must have an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Education Program (IEP) with 15 hours of special education and related services. 3)Must be able to be served in the home and community with Autism Waiver services. 4)Must meet additional Autism Waiver medical and technical eligibility criteria. Financial Criteria: 1) An individual’s income and assets are reviewed to determine financial eligibility for Medical Assistance. 2)The child’s monthly income may not exceed 300% of SSI benefits, and the countable assets may not exceed $2,000 or $2500 (depending on eligibility category).
